Questions
What is SSL?
SSL or Secure Socket Layer is an encryption technology used to secure communications between the end user and the server. To enable the encryption you need to install a certificate, this can be a validated certificate or a self signed certificate. A self signed certificate will always warn the user that the certificate is not validated by a certificate authority.
Why should I have an SSL?
The main purpose of SSL is to encrypt sensitive information sent across the internet. SSL can also be used for authentication purposes, ensuring you are connecting to the correct server and ensuring your password is not sent over the internet in plain text. Having a validated SSL certificate provides trust by showing your users you care about protecting their information. It is very good practice to have a validated SSL certificate.
What types of SSL certificates are available?
Currently there are 4 types of SSL certificates - Self Signed, Domain Validated, Organisation Validated and Extended Validated.
What is the difference between certificate types?
Trust and security. The more validation that goes into a certificate, the more trust it generates with end users, and the less likely it is that a malicious organization has created a fraudulent certificate. EV certificates or Extended Validation certificates are the most secure available and provide the most amount of trust.
Are Domain Validated certificates ok?
Domain Validated certificates or DV Certificates are ok to use for generally securing a website. It does provide some basic validation by sending an email to the domain owner or verifying DNS records. Free domain validated certificates are available through cPanel, but have to be re-validated every 90 days. Commercial DV certificates like RapidSSL is the best choice here if you wish to go the Domain Validated route.
What are Extended Validation (EV) certificates?
The encryption used by Extended Validated certificates is the same as Domain Validated certificates. The main difference is the verification and the end user experience. The identity verification process is a lot more involved with the Certificate Authority verifying the applicants entity identity thoroughly. The difference to the end user is a green bar showing country of origin and the organisation name in the browsers address bar. This is by far the most appropriate certificate for ecommerce sites and other sites that transmit sensitive information with the end users.
What is a Wildcard SSL certificate?
A wildcard certificate is a public key certificate which can be used to secure multiple sub domains. For example, a wildcard certificate *.gohosting.com.au could be used to secure www.gohosting.com.au example.gohosting.com.au and any other sub-domain ending in gohosting.com.au
How long does it take to activate an SSL certificate?
A RapidSSL certificate (DV) can be activated very fast, where as an EV or Extended Validation certificate can take a few days due to the additional entity checks.
